Learn about hair loss

  • What is male pattern hair loss?

You are not alone, male pattern hair loss is the most common type of hair loss, affecting many men. It can start in some men in their 20s and becomes more common as you get older. By the age of 50 half of all men will experience hair loss.

  • What causes male pattern hair loss

Male pattern hair loss is hereditary. If you have male pattern hair loss you are sensitive to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which circulates in your blood and causes hair follicles to shrink. Over time, the hair follicles may become so small that no hair can grow, causing you to lose your hair.

  • How do I know if I have male pattern hair loss

As the name may suggest, this type of hair loss follows a typical pattern on the top, front and upper back of the head:

    1. Hair is lost from the front of the head, resulting in a receding hairline
    2. Hair is lost from the top of the head and begins to thin
    3. These two balding areas meet to form a U-shape at the back and sides of the head
    4. The hair that is left is often finer and does not grow as quickly as it used to

  • What will happen if I don't treat it?

Without treatment, you are likely to continue losing your hair. While some men can go completely bald in less than five years, for most men this will take between 15 and 25 years. The speed at which you lose your hair varies.
